Friday, June 18, 2015 - Barb's Place @ Warm Heart

During our last day at Warm Heart, the Building Futures Thailand educational team met with the teachers at Warm Heart and the principal of the Mae Pang school where many of the children attend. We modeled the use of the various intervention tools we brought to help them meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of the students. We left Warm Heart with many resources to use for teaching English and meeting the diverse needs of their students. All of the teachers seemed excited to put our plans to use. We will be checking in regularly via email to provide additional support as the need arises.

Thursday, June 17, 2015 - Barb's Place - Educational Team

Today the educational team with Building Futures Thailand observed at Thon Loong School.  We handed out school supplies that were donated by friends and family from the States.  The children were so excited to get what we would consider basic supplies.  As educators it is amazing to walk into a classroom where you don't speak their language and yet you can understand what skill they are teaching.  Later in the day, we worked with the Warm Heart children to implement some learning and behavior strategies as they were learning English in Barb's Place.  Our goal was to use the strategies with the after-school teachers so they knew how to use them with the children.

Thursday, June 17, 2015 - Landscaping around Warm Heart

Today Kris and Chad were put to work planting along the exterior of two demonstration fields. They dug holes, mixed fertilizer, and planted about 100 plants. The plants' roots produce nitrogen which enhances the soil and yields a better crop. This system eliminates the use of chemicals which are bad for the environment and expensive. Warm Heart will use the demonstration fields to showcase to local farmers different farming techniques in hopes to convince them to utilize these more economical and environmentally friendly systems.

Wednesday, June 16, 2015 - Landscaping around Barb's Place

Chad and Kris spent a full day planting 165 trees and flowers around Barb's Place.  Not only will this enhance the exterior of Barb's Place, it also serves in providing shade to the building which in turn makes the interior of the building cooler.  Air conditioning does not exist at Warm Heart.

Wednesday, June 16, 2015 - Barb's Place

Our Building Futures Thailand education team continued to create and gather resources to be used to support the children at Warm Heart.  We sorted some
school supplies into bags that we will deliver to the nearby Thon Loong school, which we are visiting tomorrow morning.  Our greatest accomplishment today was finalizing plans for the first Warm Heart Family Meeting that was held today in Barb’s Place.  The Family Meeting will be used as a way for the children to develop an understanding of their emotions, which is not typical in Thai culture.  Children enjoyed gathering together, especially breaking open the pinata as a part of the lesson on happiness and sharing.

Tuesday, June 15, 2015 - Chiang Mai Nursery

Today Michael, Chad and Kris began surveying our flower beds to formulate a plan for landscaping to provide shade to Barb's Place along with beautifying it. We traveled to a nursery in Chiang Mai to search for the plants that would best serve our needs. The nursery was an amazing place. Every tropical plant, tree, shrub, and grass could be found there. Tough decisions had to be made, as everything was beautiful. Once we made our choices, we loaded up the truck and returned to Warm Heart. Upon our return Michael gave a call to the children and they all rushed over with smiles on their faces ready to lend a helping hand. We then unloaded about 7 different variety of plants totaling 150 individual containers.

Monday, June 14, 2015 - Barb's Place @ Warm Heart

Upon our arrival to Warm Heart we unpacked 13 suitcases full of cloths, books, school supplies, and educational materials. We spent the rest of the day organizing and categorizing 11 separate bins of school supplies and separating cloths by type. It was an impressive amount of donations, and we appreciate everyone's efforts in collecting them all.

This morning the monks arrived to bless Barb's Place.  There was a 90 minute ceremony in Barb's Place which consisted of prayers and lunch afterwards. Following the departure of the monks, work resumed on the assembly and decoration of Barb's Place.

Later in the afternoon after the kids returned from school, we threw a party for the kids which included snacks and a pinata.  Watching these kids enjoy the art of hitting a pinata for the first time is always a treat.

The picture posted is of Michael, Kris, Linda & Evelind at the blessing of Barb's Place.

Warm Heart always has 7 - 10 international volunteers that spend a minimum of 3 months onsite.  The volunteers professions range from doctors and nurses to accountants and IT professionals, all skills which are useful here.  Today (Thanksgiving) all hands were on deck to assemble the furniture purchased for Barb's Place.

In the evening, the volunteers from China, Korea, Brazil, Spain and the US cooked a Thanksgiving dinner for us.  It was a great night.

Barb's Place is complete with the exception of wiring for internet and furnishing it.  Building Futures will be furnishing Barb's Place the week of Thanksgiving.

Notice the bucket lights.  They are Michael's latest design to get the pathways lit and keep the lights dry.  Great idea!

Michael tells us "All of the children keep telling me that they want to live there. Then I remind them of how cool it is going to be with the red desks and black computer lab and they say, "oh, ok, we'd rather have that!""

Tuesday, August 26, 2014 - Washington D.C.

Tonight I was able to get together with Evelind (co-founder of Warm Heart) to discuss how the new center will be used and how to furnish it accordingly.  She has informed me that the children at Warm Heart (after viewing our BFT past project pictures) are so excited for their new center to be finished.  Three more months to go!

August 1, 2014 - Email from Kerry Alday, Winter Garden FL

Mom spent many years educating children and she loved it. Her educational career brought on many great things: many happy parents and kids that loved her (yes, I still hear from people who were in her preschool class that say how wonderful she was, plus meeting one of her favorite people, Joan (and of course marrying our father). She also encouraged me to be a teacher which has served me well over the past 19 years. Not to mention how much she wanted to teach our kids: how to hold a pencil, gardening, and of course sports. She was all about learning and now in her memory a building meant for learning will stand bearing her name.

She would be (and was) so proud of the difference you made in Thailand for many children. I am also proud of my sister who has devoted so much time to children who lost their mothers even earlier than we did. Nothing can bring their parents back but setting them up so they can be successful in life is the greatest gift someone can give.

You are amazing Kris!

Kerry

Ms. Schecter and Mr. Shafer live full-time at Warm Heart and serve as the Director and Director of Finance in a volunteer capacity and cover all of their own personal and work related expenses themselves.  They function as house "grandparents' to all of the Warm Heart children, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, manage all aspects of the organizations affairs, and contribute to the physical labor of tending Warm Heart's animals, gardens, and orchards.

Thursday, November 28, 2013 - The Koh Sirae School

As our last full work day started on Thanksgiving, we still had a lot to do to ensure the project would be completed in time for the school party scheduled for the kids to see their new library on Friday morning. The HP all-in-one computer work stations were delivered around 11am and installed while blinds were hung around the room and paint trim was finished. Following the installation of the Fathead wall décor decals and magnet boards in the check-in area by the front door, a new chalk board decal was also affixed to the reading area which includes bean bag chairs for the kids to sit in while they read. The final touches were made, basic cleaning done and the furniture was reset before the pictures were snapped and high fives all around as this year’s project came to a close. What a great way to give thanks.

Wednesday, November 27, 2013 - The Koh Sirae School

Today’s focus was primarily on furniture as we assembled 50 office chairs, bookshelf cabinets and utility tables for the library with the help of some of the students. Most of the kids who attend the Koh Sirae School are middle school age; however, the facility supports children up to age sixteen. While we waited for additional paint to be delivered to finish the walls tomorrow, work also began on the room configuration to accommodate Thursday’s computer delivery and WiFi network installation. The excitement is beginning to build as the room is starting to take shape and will be completed by Friday.

Tuesday, November 26, 2013 - The Koh Sirae School

After day two, the painting required across the roughly 1500 square foot room is almost complete and half of the new library furniture is now assembled which included bookshelves and tables. Each day as the team works the children watch through the windows as the transformation occurs right before their eyes. During the school’s daily breaks, many wander over to be near the action as they frequently check-in on our progress and stop in to smile and wave. Regardless of the language barrier, it’s obvious they want to help so tomorrow we have a few things planned for those who stop by.

Monday, November 25, 2013 - The Koh Sirae School

As the five Building Futures Thailand (BFT) volunteers arrived in Siray Bay, we were greeted by Mr. Kittiphum the Director of the Koh Sirae School. The majority of the children who attend this school rely on it for their daily needs such as food and clothing in addition to their education, so the school’s operational budget never seems to be enough to cover all the basic requirements. This week’s project will focus on a complete overhaul of the school’s library which will include a new computer lab that will be used by the 1000 students who attend the school.

Our day started by assessing the pre-ordered supplies and organizing boxes to ensure we had all the necessary materials to begin our work. By Friday of this week, the library will be painted, include all new furniture, two routers for a new WiFi network and 17 all-in-one HP workstations. The five volunteers that will be completing the project this week are from the United States and reside in Virginia, Nebraska, and California.
